The Tools We Reach for First (and the Ones That Surprised Us)

Every crafter has their go-to tools—the ones we instinctively grab every time we start a new project. For us, it’s all about simplicity, efficiency, and a little bit of unexpected magic.
What Are Our Must-Have Cross Stitch Tools?
Let’s start with the classics. These tools have earned their spot at the top of our kit:
- Embroidery Needles: We rely on John James Tapestry Needles (Size 26). They're smooth, strong, and just the right size for detailed stitching.
- Embroidery Hoops: A good hoop makes all the difference. We love this classic beechwood Embroidery Hoop for keeping fabric perfectly taut without warping.
- Thread Organizer: Keeping thread tidy is a game changer. The Floss Organizer Box helps us stay organized and color-coded with ease.
- Scissors: A sharp, precise pair is essential. And, while we love Gingher Stork Embroidery Scissors for their clean cuts and classic design, we've found this knock off pair works just as well.
Which Tool Changed the Way We Work?
Believe it or not, one of our biggest workflow upgrades came from a tool we never expected to use for stitching: a tiny makeup brush.
Yep, a soft travel-size blending brush (the kind you'd use for eyeshadow) is perfect for dusting off stray thread fuzz or gently brushing away loose fibers from fabric. It's gentle, effective, and surprisingly satisfying to use.
Once we added this brush to our workspace, our projects stayed neater, and finished photos looked a lot cleaner, too. Small touch, big impact!
Other Surprisingly Useful Craft Tools
- Mini LED Light: Stitching at night? A clip-on craft light saves our eyes and helps us see every detail. Even better, if you're working on Aida 18+, it's worth upgrading to this light that also has a built-in magnifying glass. Save your eyes!
- Magnetic Needle Minder: We love using a cute magnetic needle minder to keep track of our needle when we take breaks.
Why the Right Tools Matter
Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience, the right tools don’t just make crafting easier—they make it more enjoyable. When your hoop doesn’t slip and your threads don’t tangle, your creativity flows.
And sometimes, the tools that surprise us the most—like a humble makeup brush—can totally elevate the way we work.
